Flat Back Studs
Why are these studs sold as singles?
Our studs are sold individually so you can mix and match! They are made for various piercing locations on the ear, so many people may not need a pair. To order a pair, simply add two to your cart.
I ordered two pairs of studs, but only received one. What happened?
*Please see the above question that explains why our studs are sold in singles
Please double check your order to ensure you ordered 2 pairs (4 individual flat back studs).
If you ordered correctly and still didn't receive your full order, please reach out to our customer service team: support@getpiercedco.com and they can take care of you!
My stud won't stay together. Is it damaged?
We get it, these studs have a learning curve, and this is a common question! They are designed to be held together by tension between the decorative pin top and the post/hollow tube portion of the stud.
Your order will arrive with a card that shows the steps of how to tighten the tension bond. If you don't have that anymore, no worries! You can find a photo and video below.
To increase the tension bond (make the closure tighter), the pin top will need to have a slight bend in it. The photo and video below show how to achieve this.
See photo HERE.
See video demonstration HERE.
*MORE BEND=TIGHTER FIT*
Be careful to only insert the pin 1-2mm into the post to bend it. If you insert it further than that, you will be bending it too close to the weld on the decorative top, and the pin can snap off (we do not replace jewelry that is broken due to bending the pin incorrectly).
When you receive your earrings, and each time you put them in, you'll need to check the tension bond to make sure the front and back are secured together tightly.
How do I insert my flat back stud?
Great question! The flat backs are a little confusing. These earrings are not the typical stud you can put in with your eyes closed! There is a learning curve to use them, and they take some practice to get used to; but trust us- once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back to regular pokey studs again!
Steps to insert flat backs:
1. Hold on the front and back of the earring and pull apart to open the stud. Make sure the tension bond is tight so your stud will stay securely in place. See this VIDEO.
2. Insert the flat back post from the backside of your ear, and push it forward until you can see the opening of the hollow tube from the front of your ear.
3. Insert the decorative pin top into the hollow tube and, using your thumb and index finger, push them together gently.
Here's a VIDEO that shows the process using our Flat Back Insertion Tool to insert the studs.
Do I NEED the Insertion Tool?
The short answer is no. But the tool makes it a million times easier to put your studs in. Especially when it comes to more difficult piercing placements such as tragus, conch, forward helix, nostril, etc., the tool is a game changer!
To insert your flat backs without an Insertion Tool, fold your ear over until you can see the back of your piercing, and insert the post directly into your piercing. Some customers have also said they've been able to use an old regular earring stud as a "guide" for their flat back stud.
How do I remove flat back studs?
To remove, simply hold on the front of the earring with one hand, and the back of the earring with the other hand, and pull apart. If it is really tight, you can slightly twist while pulling. See this VIDEO for a demonstration!
What size are your flat back studs?
Our studs are 18 gauge (1mm) thickness. Each stud comes with a 6mm and 8mm length post so you can choose which length fits your piercing best.
We also have replacement posts available for purchase in the following lengths: 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm.
Do these work for nostril piercings too?
If the gauge and length fit your anatomy, these absolutely work! Our studs are 18 gauge (1mm) thickness and come with a 6mm and 8mm post.
To insert flat backs into a nostril piercing, the Flat Back Insertion Tool is HIGHLY recommended, as it will be nearly impossible to put them in without one.
General Questions
What is your jewelry made of?
Our jewelry is made primarily out of ASTM F-136 implant-grade titanium and 316L stainless steel. These are excellent grades of metal that are safe for sensitive skin. Always check the product listing to read the type of metal for each piece. Our flat back studs are always implant-grade titanium.
*gold pieces are high quality 18k gold PVD plating over one of these two metals
I've never heard of implant-grade titanium. Can you explain why it's better than surgical steel?
Implant-grade titanium is highly biocompatible. This means it is less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritations, making it ideal for people with sensitive skin or metal allergies. Surgical steel, while a good option for some people, can contain nickel, which is a common allergen.
My piercings won't heal. Should I try these earrings?
Our jewelry is recommended for healed piercings only. If you are struggling with healing a piercing, we recommend having it evaluated by a reputable piercer in your area.
If it's only sensitive ears you struggle with, we recommend trying our implant-grade titanium flat back studs!
